(More After The Jump...)

The 2012 Monterrey Open launched with a teary-eyed tournament director finding out he had lost his drawing card and top seed Serena Williams to an ankle injury.  It ended with the event perhaps being the launching pad for the WTA's next star.  18 year old Hungarian Timea Babos won the first tour-level title of her fledgling career at this year's Monterrey Open with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Romania's Alexandra Cadantu.  The title vaulted Babos into the WTA Top 100 for the first time as she moved from #107 to her new career high of #68 with the title.

The Monterrey tournament is small in the grand scheme of things, an international series event with a purse of just $220,000.  In all honesty, the winner's check of $37,000 might not even afford the champion a purse in some of the world's ritziest boutiques.  Nonetheless, the four year old event has a solid honor roll of champions including Marion Bartoli and two-time winner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova neither of whom contested this year's edition.

What makes Timea Babos one to watch?:

  • She is just 18 years old
  • She is 5'10" so she has the size to compete with the tour's resident Glamazons
  • She just turned pro in 2011
  • She defeated 2nd seeded veteran Sara Errani in a tight three set semifinal to reach her first WTA final
  • She won three doubles junior majors (Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open) with Sloane Stephens
  • Monterrey was only Babos' fourth tour level main draw (including two appearances as a wildcard in her home tourney in Budapest)
  • She was a semifinalist last week in her third tour level event in Bogota
  • She won four challenger events in 2011
  • While she's currently ranked #68, coming out of last year's Monterrey tournament, she was #275 in the world

  2. Very nice article and very helpful. Timea Babos will meet Simona Halep in today's game played in Us Open tournament. In their last H2H meeting played at Guangzhou Open, Halep won the match with 2:0. I wonder if Babos prepared us with a surprise today. Based on the past results of the two players, I would expect Halep to perform well during this game and go for a victory. It should be interesting to see if Halep will win by 2 sets difference as her last head to head meeting.
