Nadal played an impressive, aggressive match, taking the initiative earlier than usual, pounding home six aces and never facing a break point. If he looked more comfortable on court than his rival Novak Djokovic did in his first rounder, it's more than just the crowd support. "I always try my best to be ready to play in good condition when I'm playing in Madrid," said Nadal. "I arrived here on Thursday, knowing that the conditions would be difficult. I never arrived Thursday before to no one tournament. when you see all of this, it's because my...motivation to play well here is probably higher than the rest of the places." Nadal also clarified his thoughts on the blue clay: "If this tournament happens in the summer, if this tournament happens at the end of the year, I never would have any word against the change, said Nadal. WTA Stars Still Smiling: Ana Ivanovic dropped a tight match 6-4, 6-4 to World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka yesterday after taking a 4-1 lead to open the match. "I think that the whole country and, of course, all of us, are very proud to have reached the final."
The winner of the match, Victoria Azarenka has focused on staying positive even in the face of adversity. When she was down 4-1, she said "...I knew I could turn it around. I just needed a small opportunity." It's been a shift in Azarenka's mindset that has been the catalyst to her improved results and No. 1 ranking. A fact which is not lost on Azarenka. "I can see by the results that that's what's helping me, so why would I go back to doing the wrong things, questioned Azarenka. "But definitely, it's not easy because there's always times when you get frustrated....You always have some obstacles to go through." Azarenka's next obstacle, another Roland Garros champion.
